“This is one of Cindy Crawford’s first beauty shoots, who then went on to become quite the face of the Revlon brand. The credits behind this ad are pretty astonishing: Steven Meisel took the photograph; Francois Nars did the makeup; Oribe did her hair.

Revlon Meisel 1

The dress is custom Bill Blass couture, and the jewelry is a zillion dollars of David Webb. And believe it or not, I had to fight Revlon management to not retouch out Cindy’s signature beauty mark.”

“The great American fashion designer Halston had died, and his business was shut down. But I knew his breathtaking Olympic Tower showroom, overlooking St. Patrick’s Cathedral, still existed.

London Halston 1

To give the mass-market fragrance Ciara the sleek city edge I was looking for, I shot this in Halston’s closed showroom, and asked the stylist to channel Halston’s sublimely simple clothing.
PS – I had the massive windows fogged, so the view of New York City didn’t steal the show.”

Real Life 1

“Italian Vogue asked if they could use my Soho office, in New York, for a photo shoot with Steven Meisel. The office was a converted garment factory loft. I retained as much of the real industrial factory fixtures as possible…

Steven ended up using 2 girls from my public relations business, Erin and Jackie, as the models.”

“This is 15 year old Leonor Scherrer shot for a Revlon Ultima II cosmetics ad on the tarmac at JFK airport. The US government gave us permission to drive a Porsche onto the runway and shoot under a real Air France supersonic Concorde airplane.

Ultima 2

The interior is shot in a different British Airways Concorde, simply because I liked the leather interior of that plane better. Oh, and Leonor is wearing couture Azzedine Alaïa, and carrying 2 giant Hermès bags – along with a sable coat.”

“In order to give an extremely conservative, American fashion brand, Castleberry, an appealing sensuality, I used the fabulous model Carla Bruni to show how the clothes should and could really look…

…not only did the ads catch the eye of hundreds of women,
Carla Bruni went on to catch the eye of, and marry, the future president of France!”
